Michael is the CEO & Founder of Valjean Society. Michael has lived through Standard Probation, Intensive Probation, Prison and Parole. Michael knows what it takes to succeed in each of these environments and now partners with Maricopa County Adult Probation and the Arizona Department of Corrections to help Valjean Society participants navigate probation or parole after release from ADC custody in order to successfully transition and become a valued asset of our community.

Retired, United States Foreign Service
Mike Shelton worked for 27 years as a Foreign Service Officer, serving tours at U.S. Embassies in five countries, and at several assignments at the U.S. State Department in Washington, DC. After retiring from the Foreign Service in 2001, Mike moved to Arizona and worked another decade with the City of Phoenix to attract foreign investment to Phoenix. Since his retirement in 2012, Mike has served on the Boards of several non-profit organizations and has helped with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program every year. He is very pleased to be helping Valjean Society achieve its objectives.
Secretary of the Board | Mary Zumoff
Retired, Women In New Recovery
Mary Zumoff is a currently Licensed Professional Counselor (#0551) and Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor (#0294) who retired from private practice eight years ago. Her specialty is substance abuse, particularly those who were relapse prone. She also has many years of working with PTSD. She has worked in an in-patient rehab, intensive outpatient program, and then individual work in her private practice. After retirement she volunteered as a therapist at Coconino County Jail in the Exodus program which worked with female substance abusers. She also volunteered in the rehab program Women in New Recovery.
ValSoc Board Member | Dr. Carl Schwartz
Retired, Attorney and Counselor
Since 1977, Dr. Carl Schwartz has been helping people live happier and more fulfilling lives. During that time he has created a method that merges spiritual, psychological and neurolinguistic models. Dr. Schwartz holds both a PhD and J.D. degree. He has advanced training in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Hypnotherapy, and LENS (Biofeedback). He is also trained in Mindfulness Practices, Solution Focus Approaches, and the Eastern practices of Time, Space and Knowledge. Dr. Schwartz currently lives and practices in Tempe, Arizona.
